SAN PABLO – First-year Gavilan College head coach Joffre Longoria and his Rams squad earned their first win, a convincing 40-13 triumph at Contra Costa College on Saturday afternoon.
The Rams played their finest game of the season, their 40 points on offense were a season-high while the defense held Contra Costa to just 13 points, which was also a season-best.
Gavilan had opened the season with a pair of tough losses, including a 61-6 setback at Feather River College last Saturday. But the Rams were able to bounce back to earn Longoria his first Gavilan head coaching victory.
"I am proud of how the team responded from last week," said Longoria. "The players and staff worked hard all week to get better. We played as a team and had big plays on all aspects of the game. It was a good team win. GO RAMS!"
Gavilan College Director or Athletics & Kinesiology Jamie Adams shared similar feelings about the team's effort and victory.
"I couldn't be prouder of Coach Longoria and our student-athletes," Adams said. "Their hard work, resilience, and belief in each other were on full display. This first win under Coach Longoria marks the beginning of an exciting new chapter for our program with a lot of success still to come."
The Rams will look to carry the momentum into next week. Gavilan will host San Joaquin Delta College on Sep. 20 in the first of two straight home games. Kickoff vs. Delta is set for 6 p.m. at Gilroy High School. That contest will be followed by a Sep. 27 matchup at home against Los Medanos College, also at 6 p.m.
