Rams edged at Monterey Peninsula, 4-2

MONTEREY – Rickey Wilkerson smacked a solo home run but Gavilan College was held to five hits in a close 4-2 loss at Monterey Peninsula College in Game 2 of a three-game Coast Conference series on Thursday.

The Rams jumped out in front 1-0 after Wilkerson's blast in the top of the second inning. But MPC responded with a run in the bottom of the second to tie it and went ahead with a pair of runs in the fourth.

Gavilan got back within a run after Agustin Gomez scored on an RBI groundout by Orlando Lewis in the top of the seventh. Monterey Peninsula once again answered with an insurance run.

Wyatt Barton put together a solid start on the mound for Gavilan. He went 6.1 innings, allowing 3 runs and 8 hits. Eric Richard closed out the contest for the Rams with 1.1 innings of scoreless relief with a pair of strikeouts.

MPC has taken the first two games of the series. With the loss, Gavilan dropped to 8-23 overall and 3-8 in conference play. Gavilan will look to salvage the series on Saturday when the two teams meet in the finale back in Gilroy on Saturday (Apr. 5) at 1 p.m.
