Seven-run, fourth-inning lifts Rams to win over Monterey Peninsula

GILROY – Jacob Schlesselman went 2 for 4 with a home run and 4 RBI to help lead Gavilan College to a 12-11 win over visiting Monterey Peninsula College in a Coast Conference South Division game on Friday.

Monterey Peninsula opened the contest scoring four runs to put the Rams in an early hole.

Schlesselman got Gavilan on the board, launching a solo home run in the bottom of the second to begin chipping away at the lead.

MPC responded with two more runs in the top of the third before the Rams came back to score four runs in the bottom of the frame. Gavilan took advantage of a Monterey error and wild pitch to score a pair of runs while Miles Guardino hit an RBI single and Damian Tamayo delivered a sacrifice fly for the Rams' other two runs.

But a seven-run surge in the bottom of the fourth proved to be vital to a Rams' win.

Schlesselman provided the big blow of the inning, coming through with a bases-loaded double to clear the bases to put Gavilan up 11-6. Jaden Bitter and Joshua Heard also hit RBI singles as part of the rally.

The Lobos put up three runs in the fifth and two in the eighth, but Gavilan was able to hang on for the win.

Joey Stover picked up the win in relief while Louis Zulaica closed out the win striking out a pair in a perfect ninth-inning. The Rams' victory snapped a nine-game losing streak.
